Bradley Walsh: ‘Had a lucky escape’ The Chase star’s ex Bernie Nolan on their romance

Bradley Walsh, 56, met Bernie Nolan, who died from breast cancer in 2013, back in 1989.

The two were introduced by her sister, Loose Women panelist Coleen Nolan, and her husband at the time, Shane Ritchie.

Bernie spoke about her time with Bradley in her autobiography, Survivors: Our Story, From Us to You With Love.

Ahead of its release, the Nolan singer spoke to the Mirror in 2011 where she addressed having a a “lucky escape” from Bradley.

Bernie claimed she had caught The Chase star with other women whilst they were together, but despite his transgressions, she forgave him.

“It went on like that for ages,” she told The Mirror: “In the end, I relented again. I really thought Brad and I would marry and it’d be for keeps. Mum even took me out shopping to look at wedding dresses.”

However, after her friend reportedly saw Bradley having a candle-lit dinner in a restaurant, Bernie said she called it a day.

“I felt sick,” the late star said. “I’d tried to trust him again and again, but each time I’d been made to look like a fool.”

She went on: “When I think about it now, I feel I had a lucky escape. A while later he wrote me a letter saying he hoped we could still be mates.

“I wrote him one back saying: ‘I didn’t want to be your mate. I wanted to be your wife’.”

Despite things not working out for her and Bradley, Bernie went on to find happiness with drummer Steve Doneathy and the pair married in 1996.

They had a daughter, Kate, who was stillborn and another daughter, Erin in 1999.

Elsewhere, Bradley went on to marry Donna Derby in 1997 and they share one son together, 22-year-old Barney.

The Chase favourite previously gushed over his wife and told HuffPost his family have helped keep him grounded over the years.

“Definitely my family, my wife especially,” he said. “Without a doubt.”

When asked what he tried to bring to his relationship, he said: “I try to bring love, stability and reliability. And a shoulder to cry on, or a shoulder to lean on.”

Bradley and Donna put on a loved-up display at the BAFTA TV Awards earlier this month as they posed together on the red carpet.

Donna was dressed in a stunning strapless gown which billowed to the floor while Bradley looked suave in a black tux.

The couple beamed away to photographers with their arms around one another before heading inside the venue.

The Chase continues tonight on ITV at 5pm.
