The 70-year-old is still working on his penultimate novel, The Winds of Winter, even though Game of Thrones has ended. Martin has revealed in recent interviews that he told the showrunners the main plot points of his ending for A Song of Ice and Fire’s final novel, A Dream of Spring. Although he has teased that some minor character’s ending will be different from where they end up in the TV show. But just who could this be?
Well, now Game of Thrones writer Dave Hill has revealed that originally Ser Jonah Mormont survived the show, rather than dying at the Battle of Winterfell.
Speaking with EW, he said: “For a long time we wanted Ser Jorah to be there at The Wall in the end.
“The three coming out of the tunnel would be Jon and Jorah and Tormund.
“But the amount of logic we’d have to bend to get Jorah up to The Wall and get him to leave Dany’s side right before [the events in the finale] … there’s no way to do that blithely. And Jorah should have the noble death he craves defending the woman he loves.”
Now considering the original plan for Ser Jorah to survive Game of Thrones, perhaps he’s one of the minor characters who Martin will let live through The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring.
In his new blog post, the author teased how the books’ ending will differ.
He wrote: “How will it all end? I hear people asking. The same ending as the show? Different?
“Well… yes. And no. And yes. And no. And yes. And no. And yes.”
