BBC newsreader Jane Hill reveals secret battle with breast cancer as she returns to work

Jane Hill, 49, was back on BBC One lunchtime news yesterday for the first time since November.

Taking to Twitter, the newsreader explained the reason for her absence was to take time off to have breast cancer treatment.

Before the lunchtime news, she wrote on Twitter: “Big day today. On air for the first time since November.

“Still… 6 months out of the newsroom… that’s been plenty of time to sort #Brexit, right…? See you for @bbcnews at One.”

Jane then joked her pass didn’t work after she tried to get into the building.

She said: “Oh, and in true #W1A style, my pass had been cancelled and I couldn’t get into the building. #welcomeback.”

After her return to work, Jane admitted she was “overwhelmed” with the positive comments she had received.

“Overwhelmed by so many lovely back-to-work messages,” she wrote on Twitter.

“I just want to say that my return wouldn’t have been possible without our NHS.”

Thanking the NHS, she continued: “Sending love & thanks to the numerous @NHSuk staff who spotted my breast cancer, treated it, and continue to look after me. Thank you all.”

Jane was inundated with messages from many of her 27,2000 followers who wished her a speedy recovery.

One person commented: ”Pleased that you are recovering well Jane.”

Another said: “So sorry to hear the reason for your absence but fantastic news that you are better. Make sure you ease yourself back into work. All the very best to you. x.”

A third added: “Did wonder where you’d been @JaneHillNews Really hope that you;re well on the road to recovery now though!”

Elsewhere, her BBC co-star, Bill Turnbull, 63, has opened up about his prostate cancer battle and revealed he had finished his chemotherapy.

The former BBC Breakfast host, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2017, has undergone several rounds of chemotherapy.

Speaking of life after chemotherapy, the presenter told The Mirror: “My hair has grown back and I’m letting my hair grow long just to celebrate. I know I looked awful last year.”

Reflecting on a picture he saw of himself last year, he added: “I saw pictures of myself and I was, ‘Oh Lord, that was just ghastly’. I was in the middle of the treatment.”

Despite saying he now “feels fantastic,” the presenter said he had been getting side effects from his hormone treatment.

“I get hot flushes, menopause symptoms,” he spilled. Mine won’t last for a bit, my symptoms will go on forever. So that’s a lot of fun.”
