Roger Federer: ATP ace reveals his Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal wish after Miami battle

Federer is arguably the biggest name in tennis and one of the most popular athletes in the world.

And his popularity was evidenced last week at the Italian Open when the officials raised ticket prices following confirmation of the 37-year-old’s appearance in Rome.

In March at the Miami Open, Albot faced Federer for the first time in his career and won the opening set 6-4.

In a tense second set, the fans at the Hard Rock Stadium cheered Federer on and the Swiss recovered to win 7-5.

Federer completed the comeback by winning the third set 6-3 and said afterward: “It was a good atmosphere at the end.

“I thought it was quite electric, how it usually is in Miami.”

Albot was asked to reflect on his experience of playing Federer and the Moldovan admitted the atmosphere had made him determined to play the likes of Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

“It was an interesting experience, I have to say,” Albot told the ATP.

“I’d never played against Roger, it was my first time and on Hard Rock Stadium it was even more unbelievable.

“The crowd was supporting Roger more obviously. When he won a point it was pretty crazy in there, [but] when I was winning the point it was silent.

“I liked it and I hope I can play against him in some other tournaments.

“I’d also like to play against some other top guys like Rafa and Novak to be able to compete against the best.”

When asked if he found playing Federer challenging with the crowd against him, Albot said: “Not really challenging but if you are a tennis fan, you come to watch a match and support good tennis.

“But when you support just one guy for whatever reason, it is a little bit not correct.

“And most of the people in the stadium was there only because Roger was playing.

“It is a good experience and I liked it but the crowd was obviously on his side.”
