Windows 10 May 2019 Update RELEASED and here's how to get it

The Windows 10 May 2019 Update is the latest improvement to hit the Microsoft operating system and comes with myriad features that make it appealing.

One of the most important of these is surely Windows Sandbox that is designed to help make your PC safer.

Essentially, the app creates an isolated desktop environment that has been specifically engineered to test “untrusted” programmes.

This means if an item does contain malicious code, it should not affect your PC.

Discussing the functionality, Microsoft said: “Windows Sandbox is a new lightweight desktop environment tailored for safely running applications in isolation.

“How many times have you downloaded an executable file, but were afraid to run it? Have you ever been in a situation which required a clean installation of Windows, but didn’t want to set up a virtual machine?

“At Microsoft, we regularly encounter these situations, so we developed Windows Sandbox: an isolated desktop environment where you can run untrusted software without the fear of lasting impact to your device.

“Any software installed in Windows Sandbox stays only in the sandbox and cannot affect your host. Once Windows Sandbox is closed, all the software with all of its files and state are permanently deleted.”

Other notable features housed within the May 2019 Update include an altered Start menu, the separation of Cortana from Search and the ability to remove buggy updates.

One of the most important changes offered by the new Windows 10 version comes from how it deals with storage.

The May 2019 Update will reserve around 7GB of memory or more to make sure “critical OS functions always have access to disk space”.

Users will not be able to remove the reserved space from Windows 10 and should therefore account for the added memory before downloading the May 2019 Update.

Discussing its reasoning for the change, Microsoft declared: “Starting with the next major update we’re making a few changes to how Windows 10 manages disk space. Through reserved storage, some disk space will be set aside to be used by updates, apps, temporary files, and system caches.

“Our goal is to improve the day-to-day function of your PC by ensuring critical OS functions always have access to disk space. Without reserved storage, if a user almost fills up her or his storage, several Windows and application scenarios become unreliable.

“Windows and application scenarios may not work as expected if they need free space to function. With reserved storage, updates, apps, temporary files, and caches are less likely to take away from valuable free space and should continue to operate as expected.”

Microsoft released the May 2019 Update to those that are part of its Insider Programme last month but has now granted it to all other Windows 10 fans.

To download the update, users should head to their system settings and press Update and Security > Windows Update.

From there your system will let you know if the May 2019 Update is ready to download.

It is worth noting Microsoft has a history of gradually rolling out Windows 10 upgrades, meaning you should not be worried if your PC cannot obtain it immediately.
