Waitress Musical announces new stars Ashley Roberts and Lucie Jones: WATCH the interview

It’s one of the biggest and brightest news shows in London’s West End. Waitress the Musical has fast become a fan favourite thanks to a spectacular score by Sara Bareilles and a witty and heart-warming story based on the cult 2007 film. American Idol star Katherine McPhee launched the UK version in March but her limited season has flown by and now a homegrown leading lady, Lucie Jones, is taking over permanently as pie-making Jenna. Pussycat Roberts, however, will only be performing through until the end of the summer. Express Online was there when they made the big announcement and shared their joy over being part of the sensational show.

The launch was hosted by the multi-talented Marisha Wallace who plays Jenna’s best friend, Becky.

Roberts revealed why she is so thrilled to make her musical debut in this particular production: “The script is amazing and the comedic timing of the show is fantastic and I’m excited to get in there and show a bit of my silly fun side.

“I love Sarah Bareilles and her music is fantastic and the melodies really get you. I’m really excited to show all the different sides of myself. I’m excited to get in the mix, get out there and have that live interaction with the audience.”

MUSICAL REVIEW: ‘A DELICIOUS TREAT’

Jones already has leading roles in the likes of Rent and Legally Blonde under her belt but she explained why this show is so special to her: “I’m such a Sarah Bareilles fan, I was shaking so much in my audition. I saw the show in New York and it broke me.

“It is incredible but also so funny. You cry, you laugh and you come out feeling like a better person and you feel like you want to do good things in the world.”

“It’s a treat to play someone so real. You don’t get to play these characters who have real lives and problems. We’re talking about tricky stuff – abusive relationships and unwanted pregnancy and affairs – and you don’t get to play with this stuff very often.”

It’s usually so over the top. Everyone who has come to see the show has gone “Wow, I relate to this in so many ways, more than I thought I could with a musical or play.’

“It’s a gift. I don’t know many people who wouldn’t want it.”
