Man Utd transfer news: Who is Daniel James? Swansea ace ‘agrees terms’

According to Sky Sports, Daniel James has agreed personal terms with Manchester United ahead of a summer move.

United faced stiff competition from Brighton, whose new boss, Graham Potter, managed James while at Swansea.

Speaking last month, Potter said of the Welsh starlet: “His desire to run, his courage and then his quality, we’re just lucky I think to witness it today.

“I’ve run out of superlatives. If you look at that performance, if you’re being honest, it’s above the Championship. We’re all just fortunate to witness that performance from Dan and from the team as well.

“He’ll be the first to say he needs the team with him to help him to get the ball and to provide a structure that’ll allow him to go and express himself. I think we’ve managed to do that and then he’s got his quality to go and top it all off.”

James joined Hull’s academy at nine years old and remained with the club until he joined Swansea in 2014 for an initial fee of £72,000.

The youngster excelled at Swansea and progressed to become a key figure in the Welsh club’s under-18 side, with under-23 football ensuing in the 2016/17 season.

The winger was included in Swansea’s first-team squad for an FA Cup third-round clash against Oxford and was offered a new three-year contract soon after.

He also earned a place on the bench in the Premier League fixture with Stoke in 2016.

James spent the start of the 2017/18 season on loan at League One side Shrewsbury Town but failed to break into the first-team and returned to Wales in late August.

Potter’s arrival at the Liberty Stadium saw James handed regular first-team football at the beginning of the 2018/19 campaign.

The 21-year-old went on to score five goals and provide 10 assists in 38 appearances by the end of the season.

What has Wales manager Ryan Giggs said about James?

James has made two senior appearances for Wales, scoring on his first start.

Speaking in November 2018, Giggs said: “He is on fire at the moment. He is someone who has got genuine speed and someone who is exciting. He can start a game or potentially come on and make an impact.

“You always want players who are playing regularly and he is playing really well.

“If you have front players especially who are feeling confident, that’s always a good thing.”
