Pogba bowed out of Old Trafford this season in acrimonious fashion, arguing with foul-mouthed home fans who were disparaging the midfielder.
The World Cup winner has been accused of downing tools this season and not trying his hardest under both Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Pogba did enjoy his most fruitful Premier League season yet, though, notching 13 goals and nine assists.
Alongside those goal involvements, the 26-year-old also topped the Manchester United charts in terms of completed passes and shots taken.
But Pogba’s mercuriality has caused unrest among the large sections of the fanbase who feel, despite his talent, that the side may be better off without him.
It is, therefore, not good news to many that United are basing their first purchase this summer on the dynamic midfielder.
The Daily Mail reports that Ed Woodward and co are prioritising a holding midfielder who can give the team protection “to allow Paul Pogba more attacking freedom”.
Pogba’s best position is left of a three-man midfield when given licence to attack, with two team-mates in the middle who are more willing to put in the hard yards.
He has commonly played alongside a pivot in Nemanja Matic and livewire to his right in Ander Herrera.
Matic could be sold in the summer, however, as Solskjaer seeks a more mobile replacement, while Herrera is leaving for free.
Pogba flirted with a move to Real Madrid earlier this season, saying it was a “dream” for any player to grace the Bernabeu turf under the tutelage of Zinedine Zidane.
Solskjaer all but confirmed that his talisman will stay at the club, remaining slightly coy about the situation when asked in April.
“You can’t guarantee anything in football but yes I think Paul’s gonna be here, he’s very determined to succeed at Man Utd,” the Norwegian said.
“It’s the standards he sets because when he’s creating chances, scoring goals, doing loads of work, the media, supporters, everyone looks to Paul and says could you have done better.
“He’s done fantastic for us, he’s a human being as well and we’re all the same, we want him to do well. He’s a leader in that dressing room and on the pitch for us.
“Going back to if I can guarantee, I would say yes, I can guarantee – although in life you can never – but he will be here as far as I’m concerned.”
