Gaynor Faye: Emmerdale’s Megan Macey on REAL reason behind soap exit 'I know it’s a risk’

The actress, 47, has played Megan Macey on Emmerdale since 2012 but has now announced she is departing the cast. In an interview with this week’s OK! Magazine, Gaynor Faye said the reason she was leaving was to move on to new projects. “I’ve always been the type of person who doesn’t want to stay playing the same character for too long,” she said. “I’ve been on the show for over six years and have naturally reached a point where I’d like to do some other stuff.

“I know it’s a risk but I need to push myself out of my comfort zone,” she admitted.

Gaynor previously hinted at the possibility of Megan landing herself in prison following the car accident involving Eric Pollard (played by Chris Chittell) which left him in a coma.

Wracked with guilt, Megan made the decision to hand herself over to the police after the incident.

“If Megan goes to prison, I don’t think it’d be a great place for her,” she told Digital Spy.

“I think she’d definitely get into a lot of trouble in prison. But that could be a good thing — it’d be great to play.

“We have got a little prison set because so many people go to prison on tis show!” she added.

Should that scenario play out, it would mean the door could be left open for Gaynor to return to Emmerdale in the future.

Meanwhile, Megan is also set for drama with an upcoming custody battle between her and her ex-husband Jai Sharma (Chris Bisson).

Jai is furious when he discovers the car crash was Megan’s fault and that their daughter Eliza had been in the car at the time.

He informs Megan he will be applying for custody as he no longer trusts her to take care of Eliza.

Could the custody battle have something to do with Gaynor’s exit storyline?

Prior to her role in Emmerdale, Gaynor starred in the likes of Dani’s House, Fat Friends and Playing the Field.

She began her soap career on Coronation Street back in the 1990s.

Appearing in well over 100 episodes, she played Judy Mallett from 1995 until 1999 when her character did of an embolism following a car crash.

Her acting background also includes stints on stage, having starred in Calendar Girls in 2009.

Emmerdale continues tonight at 7pm on ITV.
