Egypt explosion: Tourist bus targeted near Giza Pyramids – at least 16 injured

Most of those injured were foreign tourists, according to sources. One security source said they included South African nationals. But It is not yet clear if there were any Britons on board the bus. The bus hit the roadside bomb on the Marioutiya Road in the pyramid district.

A witness, Mohamed el-Mandouh, told Reuters he heard a “very loud explosion” while sitting in traffic near the site of the blast.

Pictures posted on social media showed a bus with some of its windows blown out or shattered, and debris in the road next to a low wall with a hole in it.

Egypt’s Giza Pyramids attract thousands of tourists each year.

In recent years the nation has been plagued by an extreme Islamist militant insurgency in the Sinai Peninsula.
