Kevin Durant injury: Warriors coach gives concerning update on potential return

When Durant pulled up in worrying scenes in Game 5 against the Houston Rockets last week, there were immediate concerns that it was an Achilles issue.

Those fears were later dismissed though, with the Warriors confirming the injury as a calf strain.

Still, Golden State have had to cope without the two-time NBA Finals MVP so far in their Conference Finals match-up against the Portland Trail Blazers.

And it was confirmed ahead of Game 3 that Durant wouldn’t be fit to return for either road game in Portland.

But there are genuine concerns that the 30-year-old may have to sit out the entire Conference Finals, with the hope of being fit to return for the Finals – if Golden State make it.

Both Steph Curry and Klay Thompson have taken on the scoring load that Durant had in his absence and have helped the Warriors take a 2-0 series lead.

Kerr recently stated that Durant’s injury was “more serious than we thought”.

However, he has now amended his comments, pulling back from putting a timeframe on his expected return.

“The right way to put it would be, with a calf injury, there’s kind of a wide range of how long a guy’s going to be out,” Kerr said.

“So he’s had them in the past where he was out a week or 10 days but right from the beginning.

“[Warriors director of sports medicine and performance] Rick [Celebrini] was telling me that you really can’t put a number of days or weeks on this.

“There’s a big range of how long it could be depending on how he responds and how bad the strain is.

“This one is taking a little bit longer than the ones he’s had in the past, but that’s OK.

“He’s coming along well and if he continues to improve at the rate he’s improving now, we’re confident that he’ll be back.

“We just don’t know when.”
