Vodafone reveals major update and it will change the way you use your phone FOREVER

Vodafone customers will see a huge increase in speeds this summer with the network confirming a date for its switch on of 5G.

The firm says that users in the UK will be able to use this ultra-fast service from July 3 2019 with both consumers and business customers able to access this update.

Vodafone has confirmed that cities including Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool and London will be among the first to see the new speeds.

Newbury, Portsmouth, Plymouth, Reading, Southampton, Stoke-on-Trent, Warrington and Wolverhampton will follow later this year.

Along with a better connection, there’s more good news as Vodafone says it will price 5G the same as 4G.

A choice of 5G smartphones will be available to buy online or in Vodafone stores over the summer, while the first smartphone goes on sale next week.

Vodafone will also offer a 5G router for use in the home and office to give customers without a fixed line connection high-speed broadband access.

Speaking about the news Vodafone UK CEO Nick Jeffery said: “We started our 5G journey more than three years ago.

“We led the way in setting 5G standards to ensure phones and networks work well together. We upgraded our masts to be able to take 5G without disruption.

“And we were the first UK company to test 5G over our all-fibre core fixed and mobile network.

“This is important. It means we can today announce the largest launch of 5G in the UK and be the first to announce 5G roaming. It means that UK businesses can lead the world in adopting 5G to boost productivity and attract investment.

“It means consumers can get the fastest mobile speeds ever, and it means that our public sector will be able to adopt new services to improve healthcare, social services and housing.”

HOW MUCH FASTER WILL IT ACTUALLY BE?

Depending on where you are in the country it’s possible to get an average 4G speed of around 20-30Mbps.

That’s as fast as most fixed-line broadband and would allow you to download an HD movie in around 20 minutes.

If you are very lucky, it is possible to get 4G speeds of around 400Mbps although this isn’t something many consumers will have ever experienced.

5G takes things to a new level with average speeds expected to exceed 100Mbps.

It’s also very likely that some users will experience speeds nearing 1Gbps with an HD movie downloading in under 40 seconds.

WILL MY CURRENT PHONE WORK WITH 5G?

The simple answer is no.

There’s very few 5G compatible smartphones available right now so it’s likely you’ll have to upgrade your device before you can gain access to this fast technology.
