Avengers Endgame: Why ‘fat Thor’ twist was ‘SCARY’ for Chris Hemsworth and the Russos

WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Avengers Endgame.

In the opening scenes of the Marvel blockbuster, the heroes track down Thanos and kill him when they learn he has already destroyed the Infinity Stones.

The film then jumps forward five years, at which point the surviving Avengers’ lives have moved on in very different ways.

For Hemsworth’s Thor, the loss and guilt had resulted in a depression – involving reclusiveness and a weight gain.

Given that reshoots for Endgame’s predecessor Infinity War were happening concurrently, Hemsworth had no time to put on the weight himself, so relied on a ‘fat suit’.

But in a new interview, directors Joe and Anthony Russo revealed that the weight of the suit risked injuring their actor.

Asked if there were any “scares” on which anything “went wrong”, Anthony told Business Insider: “Never with the cast, but Chris Hemsworth did have to wear a bodysuit for that [Thor] role.

“We had to toggle back and forth. While we were shooting Endgame where he was heavier we had to do some pickup shots for Infinity War, so he would have to go back and forth between those two looks.

“So he had to wear a bodysuit, and it was quite heavy.

“That suit started to wear on his back, which was scary when you have someone who has to be so physical.”

What’s more, the heat of Atlanta will have been tough on the star.

“We were shooting in Atlanta, so exterior stuff in Atlanta in the summer was brutal,” Anthony added.

“The actors’ costumes don’t breathe very well.”

It’s unclear where Thor’s story will progress going forward, and whether or not Hemsworth will sign up for more movies.

But the end of Endgame alluded to him joining forces with the Guardians of the Galaxy: James Gunn is set to direct their threequel once he’s done with the next Suicide Squad film.

Avengers: Endgame is out now.
