Rangers boss Steven Gerrard sends message to Alfredo Morelos with Celtic team selection

Morelos last started a game for Rangers in the previous Old Firm clash when he was sent off at Celtic Park.

The Colombia striker was banned for four games and has been on the bench since returning with Jermain Defoe keeping his place.

And Gerrard’s decision to stick with Defoe for this game shows he is no longer ready to gamble on Morelos’ antics in the big games.

Gerrard admitted he had been too lenient with Morelos after his latest dismissal – his third in the Premiership this season – and is now sticking with Defoe to finish the season.

That is despite Morelos scoring 17 goals in the league and being tipped for a big money move this summer.

With Defoe in place Rangers have won five on the bounce since the Celtic game and have cemented second place in the league.

The move to keep Defoe has also seemed to get the best out of Scott Arfield as well who has moved to a more supporting striker role rather than in central midfield.

“Defoe has come in and been excellent,” Kris Boyd said on Sky Sports.

“Rangers are in a good place as a team right now. They look strong.”

A win over Celtic today would be a double over the champions at Ibrox and would move them to within six points of their rivals.

Rangers have made one change for the game today with Allan McGregor suspended after his red card against Hibs last week.

Morelos has been linked with the Premier League, teams in France and even Borussia Dortmund but did sign a new deal earlier this season until 2023 but fans believe that was a move to hike up the price for this summer.
