Broncos make important Joe Flacco and Drew Lock decision

The Broncos have decided to give Flacco first team opportunities before opening up competition for the back-up spot.

Broncos coach Vic Fangio made the announcement on Sunday.

“Joe [Flacco] will take all of the reps with the first team,” Fangio said.

“Then we have an open competition after that and we’ll randomly play those with the twos and the threes when we do our reps.”

Flacco, who is a Super Bowl champion and MVP, was brought in from the Baltimore Ravens via a trade in this off-season.

The 34-year-old, who will be entering his 12th season in the NFL this year, was restricted to only nine games for the Ravens in 2018 as the team transitioned in their young quarterback Lamar Jackson.

Flacco threw for 2,465 yards, 12 touchdowns and six interactions and finished the year with a passer rating of 84.2.

Denver took Lock in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft and the rookie QB admitted he was excited about the prospect of learning from Flacco.

“It will definitely be a different transition,” Lock said.

“If I’m going through this transition, I’m glad to be behind Joe [Flacco] and hear what he has to say, learn from him.

“I’m excited to meet him, excited to get in the room with him and learn from a guy who’s won a Super Bowl.”

Flacco, however, might not be so receptive to the idea as ahead of the draft the veteran was clear about what he felt the Broncos should do and what he hopes to achieve this upcoming season.

“I think I had a pretty good outlook on it last year and it is what it is,” Flacco said in April.

“I want to get this team to be the best it is with me at the quarterback position.

“Obviously, that’s not of most importance to draft a quarterback, but if we do, that’s completely out of my control.

“I’m going to go out here and I’m going to compete, and he’s going to have to come out here and be on the field with me every day, too.

“So, I’m all ready for that.”
