David Luiz delivers Chelsea contract update – 'everybody is going to know in five days'

The Brazilian defender has been in talks with the club over a new deal, with the 32 year old centre back out of contract at the end of this season.

Luiz, 32, originally wanted a new two year deal from the club, but Chelsea have a policy of only offering one year deals to players over 30.

The former Paris St Germain centre back has been a key player for Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri this season, and proved his value once again in Thursday night’s dramatic Europa League semi-final penalty shoot-out win over Eintracht Frankfurt.

Luiz converted his crucial penalty in the shoot-out after Cesar Azpilicueta had missed, Eden Hazard netting the winner after superb two saves from Kepa Arrizabalaga, but also produced a brilliant clearance off the line when Eintracht looked like winning the game in normal time.

The flamboyant Brazilian said: “Yes I think I will be here for next season.

“I live in this club, so I come here every single day. Soon everybody is going to know. It will be before the Europa League Final – in five days.

“I love this club. My great moments in football were here, especially the European titles – the Champions League and Europa League. My relation with the fans has always been great since the first day I played here. I just try to my best and make them happy. Nobody wants to play in an empty stadium, when you have an opportunity to understand that we play for them.”

The £34 million defender said: “It was great to score my penalty. It was not easy, because if I missed, we were out. I was trying to do what I do in training every single day. I missed my last penalty for Chelsea in the EFL Cup Final (against Man City) and it was not a great feeling. I was happy this time.

“There is always pressure. I was just trying to keep myself calm and be concentrated.”

As for the final against Arsenal on May 29, Luiz said: “It is going to be difficult. They have a great team and a great coach. Unai Emery knows how to win this competition. I worked with him in Paris and I know how passionate he is.

“We know that if we win they will not be in the Champions League. But the pressure will be on both sides.”

And he believes a win in Baku can help the Chelsea fans, still at best lukewarm in their feelings about Sarri, come round to appreciating their manager more: “In the first three months of the season, people were so excited. They were saying ‘Oh Sarri-ball – everyone is playing well.

“After that it changed to ‘nobody knows anything, Chelsea are not good enough’. This is normal in the first season of a coach. But nobody bet that we would go to the last game of the Premier League having already qualified for the Champions League. We can finish in the top three, not just the top four. At one stage 11 or 12 points behind Tottenham – and now we are there. It is not about how you start, it’s how you end.”

“The fans already have a good connection with him. Of course the fans want to go to Baku to celebrate. It’s a final and we will try our best to win.”
