Ramadan timetable 2019: When does fasting start – what time is fasting today?

Ramadan, the ninth month in the Islamic calendar began on Sunday, May 5 and will last for 30 days until it ends on Tuesday, June 4. During the holy month, Muslims don’t eat or drink from dawn to dusk. Most Muslims fast for 11–16 hours during Ramadan – depending on where in the world they are based, but in England’s capital of London, Muslims fast for close to 18 hours.

Lasting for four weeks and two days, Ramadan is a crucial period for practising Muslims and underpins some of the religion’s core values, such as fasting, prayer and giving to charity.

Fasting is one of the five key pillars underpinning the Islamic faith.

It is seen as a way to purify spiritually as well as physically and a time get be closer to God.

Fasting involves abstaining from all food, drink, smoking and having sex from dawn to sunset.
