PS5 release date latest as rival Mad Box Console faces questionable future

Sony’s new PS5 console could be launching next year but a question mark hovers over another potential console rival.

We already know a lot about the PlayStation 5’s spec sheet, as well as what Sony wants to achieve with their new console.

However, a set release date for either the PS5 or Microsoft next Xbox console has yet to be shared.

Most analysts believe something will be announced for 2020, while Sony sharing news about their next generation plans is a good sign.

Plus, AMD, the PS5’s chip partner, has also offered some interesting news via a recent financial report.

During it, President Dr Lisa Su said AMD’s semi-custom business with Sony is expected to decline in 2019.

However, Su added that it would turn into a growth business next year.

So a PS5 release date in 2020 sounds like a good bet, and if Microsoft isn’t planning to pull a surprise release in 2019, we can probably expect the same for the Xbox Two.

But what about some of those other gaming projects that surprised fans over the past couple of months?

We know that the Atari VCS is set to launch later this year following a delayed launch.

But another console rival – the Mad Box – might never get past the concept phase.

That’s according to a recent update from Nathan Bell, Slightly Mad Studio’s online marketing director.

For those that might have missed the announcement, the studio behind Project Cars 2 and Need for Speed: Shift, revealed in 2018 that they wanted to launch a new console.

This would be the Mad Box, a Virtual Reality gaming machine which would offer some impressive specs and an intriguing design.

Exciting concepts images were showcased online, and gamers certainly sounded ready to give the new project a try.

The Mad Box wouldn’t be available to buy for some time, with Slightly Mad giving a release window based around 2022.

However, since then, Bell has confirmed that the Google Stadia announcement has thrown a spanner into the works.

The news that gaming could be moving to a streaming format appears to have changed how people feel about consoles.

Speaking to PCGamesInsider, Bell revealed: “Google’s announcement of Stadia hasn’t helped the project with our investors.

“We had some solid investment lined up, but Google saying ‘the future of gaming isn’t in a box’ hasn’t done us any favours.”

“Two investors pulled out after the announcement of Stadia. All I can say at this stage is the future of the project is questionable.”

So fans will need to keep an eye on the latest news when it comes to the Mad Box console and if it will eventually enter the market alongside the PS5 and Xbox Two.

When it comes to more news being shared by Sony regarding their new console, they’ve ruled out an announcement this week.

A new State of Play live streaming event is taking place on Thursday, May 9, and it will be focused solely on PS4 games.

The company confirmed in a new announcement: “It’ll be a quick show (around 10 minutes), but we’ve got some PS4 updates we couldn’t wait to share with you.

“PlayStation Worldwide Studios will be showing off an extended look at the upcoming MediEvil remake, as well as a first look at a new title. And we’ll have other updates and announcements from upcoming PS4 games.

“One note: Don’t expect any updates relating to our next-generation plans this time.”
