Chelsea ace Callum Hudson-Odoi reveals Raheem Sterling admiration after evil racial abuse

And the Chelsea winger, who revealed that his recovery from his ruptured achilles tendon is going well and he hopes to be back before the start of next season – also made it clear how much he admires Manchester City star Raheem Sterling for speaking out about the abuse.

England’s young black players were subjected to monkey chants and racist chanting when they won 5-1 in Podgorica last month. England reported the abuse to UEFA, but Tottenham’s Danny Rose admitted he was ‘lost for words’ when Montenegro’s were only punished by being ordered to play one match behind closed doors and fined £17,253.

Hudson-Odoi said: “The racial abuse that me, Raheem, Danny Rose and a few others got that day was unacceptable.

“To be hearing stuff from the crowd saying, ‘You’re a monkey,’ or, ‘Ooh-ah-ah.’ Stuff like that, for me it’s… why? Why do that evil?

“How can you even racially talk about someone else, or discriminate against them because they’re a different colour to you?

“If anything, the chants backfired. When it happened it didn’t put me off my game, but instead made me more motivated to beat them and make sure we won.

“I had so much respect for Raheem when he scored and did the celebration and the Instagram post. No player should ever go through the racism and discrimination Raheem has had to go through. It’s not right.

“Can we just please find a way to stop it in the game, and just in general?”

Hudson-Odoi, whose season was cut short when he was injured three weeks ago, added: “Right now, I’m absolutely gutted. I ruptured my Achilles. Ended my season early. Devastating.

“Don’t worry. I will be back, stronger than ever. I promise you. The return is coming!”

Hudson-Odoi, who was the subject of three bids by Bayern Munich in January, the last of them of around £35 million, also revealed his gratitude to England coach Gareth Southgate for picking him.

He said: “He’s an incredible man, just so calm. He genuinely wants everyone in the team to do well. He never raises his voice, because he trusts you. He doesn’t want you to be anything you don’t want to be, and he doesn’t treat people different based on what they look like or where they come from.

“When he says, ‘I’m here if you need anything,’ he means it. That was really helpful after Montenegro. Afterwards he spoke to us individually, and asked, ‘Are you okay? Do you need anything from our side?’

N’Golo Kante meanwhile has revealed that he hopes to be fit if Chelsea reach the Europa League final on May 29.

The France midfielder damaged a hamstring in Chelsea’s 3-0 win over Watford, which meant that they clinched a top four place.

But Kante’s injury means that the midfielder will miss the Europa League semi-final second leg against Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday, and the final Premier League game of the season at Leicester.

Kante had scans on the injury yesterday and the club are hopeful he will, be fit for the final in Baku, which they are favourites to get to having drawn 1-1 in Frankfurt last week.

He said: “I’m ok, I just have pain through my hamstring and I need a bit of time to check what it is. We need to check and take the time to see how long it will take.”
