Avengers Endgame screenwriters reveal why Captain America had to SURVIVE and Iron Man DIED

Today the Avengers Endgame spoiler ban lifts, as decreed by directors The Russo Brothers. And with it Marvel fans can open up the conversation further on the fates of certain characters. In the run-up to Avengers Endgame, there was a great expectation that Captain America would die. After all, he’s this pure messianic figure so surely a sacrificial death was lined up for him?

But no, that went to Iron Man, a much more flawed character, while Steve Rogers had his happy ending with Peggy Carter.

Nevertheless, this should not be that shocking, according to Avengers Endgame screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.

Speaking with The New York Times, they pointed out how both characters were mirror images of each other in terms of where their character arcs started and ended.

They said: “Everyone knew this was going to be the end of Tony Stark.”

They continued: “I don’t think there were any mandates. If we had a good reason to not do it, certainly people would have entertained it.

“The watchword was, end this chapter, and he started the chapter.

“In a way, he has been the mirror of Steve Rogers the entire time.

“Steve is moving toward some sort of enlightened self-interest, and Tony’s moving to selflessness. They both get to their endpoints.”

Really this makes perfect sense for the characters, with Tony having developed from a selfish womaniser to a sacrificial father figure with ultimately more to lose.

While Captain America began his life-giving himself to others but never got a break.

Until finally he takes a well-earned retirement by getting what he always wanted – a life with Peggy.

Avengers Endgame is out now.
