United got off to a flying start when Scott McTominay’s weak drive dribbled under Huddersfield goalkeeper Jonas Lossl.
Paul Pogba then hit the bar with a looping header but the Terriers got back level when Isaac Mbenza capitalised on a Luke Shaw mistake to slot past David de Gea.
The Spanish stopper was called upon to save with his legs on several occasions as the Red Devils struggled for fluency, while Pogba rattled the woodwork again with a strike from outside the area in the closing minutes.
The result leaves Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side four points behind fourth-place Tottenham with just a game remaining.

Manchester United player ratings vs Huddersfield Town – Premier League
GK: David de Gea – 6
Made a smart stop with his feet from Karlan Grant to keep the Terriers out but was nutmegged for the equaliser.
Another late save with his legs kept the scores level.
RB: Ashley Young – 5
An improved performance from the veteran, although he wasn’t unduly tested defensively by a toothless Huddersfield side.
Man Utd player ratings: Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay had contrasting displays against Huddersfield
Man Utd player ratings: Ashley Young has been struggling for form recently
CB: Victor Lindelof – 7
The stand-out performer in the United back line, reading danger well and carrying the ball out from defence with purpose.
CB: Phil Jones – 5
Isolated on occasions when the Terriers threatened to break in the opening 45.
Never looked completely in control, although he made a number of key interceptions and missed a great chance when he flicked a Young cross over the bar.
LB: Luke Shaw – 4
Disappointing in attack as he failed to offer much width and was woeful when trying to deal with Jonas Lossl’s clearance.
Man Utd player rating: Shaw was caught out for the Terriers’ equaliser
CM: Nemanja Matic – 4
Ineffective in front of the back four as United struggled to control the match and was withdrawn before the hour.
CM: Scott McTominay – 7
Got lucky with his early strike squirming past Lossl, but you can’t win the raffle if you don’t buy a ticket.
Displayed more urgency than many of his team-mates and took a whack on the head for his effort.
CM: Paul Pogba – 4
Another frustrating afternoon for the World Cup winner, who hit the bar with a decent header but then went missing for large periods of the second half.
One awful cross that missed everyone and went out for a throw-in summed up his efforts, while a late strike smashed the bar to compound his misery.
Man Utd player ratings: Paul Pogba had another frustrating afternoon
CAM: Juan Mata – 5
Buzzed around to little effect, dropping deep and exchanging short passes without providing much creative spark.
ST: Marcus Rashford – 4
Not much change out of the Huddersfield rearguard in the first half but was brighter after the break and linked up well with the midfield as he went looking for work.
Skewed his best chance hopelessly wide when set up by Mata.
ST: Alexis Sanchez – 3
Handed a rare chance to impress from the off but looked a shadow of the player who shone at Arsenal, losing the ball on countless occasions before being forced off injured.

Lively and dynamic after his introduction, driving forward and giving United momentum but was guilty of giving the ball away in dangerous areas.

Tried to spark something as United pushed late on.
