Justin Trudeau’s SURPRISING bonding session with Donald Trump after SNC-Lavalin scandal

Mr Trump was said to have randomly called Mr Trudeau in the midst of the SNC-Lavalin corruption scandal to give him some encouragement, according to Politico. Canadian officials said President Trump told Mr Trudeau he could relate to being dogged by the press. The bonding session between the two leaders comes despite Mr Trudeau previously defending the media.

The Canadian has accused attacks on the press of threatening democracy.

He said: “There have always been tensions between those who would speak truth to power and those who like having their power, thank you very much, and don’t necessarily want to see it frittered away.”

The Trudeau government has also in the past given a huge amount of cash to fund the media, with £381million ($675million) earmarked to the CBC.

Last year he even announced a £336million ($595million) media bailout.

But that all seems to have changed since Mr Trump attempted to soothe the Canadian over the coverage.

The SNC-Lavalin scandal which emerged earlier this year.

Mr Trudeau’s reputation came under fire in February when reports emerged alleging his senior officials prevented a major construction company from facing trial over bribery and corruption charges.

He was put under pressure to reveal what he knew about the incident.

The Canadian Prime Minister denies any wrongdoing.

The scandal centred on Canada’s former justice minister Jody Wilson-Raybould who was allegedly pressured to dropped planned charges against SNC-Lavalin.

She was said to have been told to ditch bribery and corruption trial charges against SNC-Lavalin which concerned projects in Libya and levy them with a fine instead.

A flurry of resignations followed the scandal including the expulsion of two former ministers.

Pollster surveys recorded in April show Mr Trudeau’s Liberals and opposition Conservatives tied at 35 percent ahead of the elections, according to Bloomberg.
