Argos jobs: HUNDREDS of middle manager roles at RISK in major restructure

The retailer wants to cut down on the number of in-branch management positions as part of a major restructure. Argos currently has about 30,000 members of staff, with up to six middle managers in each of its 830 stores. However, the restructure would see this number reduced to just two roles per branch. Argos claim the proposal is aimed at establishing more senior positions and to stop employees on the same management level overlapping on the same shift.

The chain said all workers at risk will be considered for updated management positions or alternative roles in the company.

It is understood each member of staff affected has been placed on consultation and in addition, has been invited to apply for new positions.

The new jobs on offer are said to include include office work, other in-store vacancies or equivalent positions at Sainsbury’s.

Argos added that it hopes to avoid compulsory layoffs.

But there are fears that hundreds will still be let go from the company.

The revamp will affect employees who perform a range of duties including customer service, managing stock and leading teams.

Argos was purchased by Sainsbury’s in 2016.

The high street chain was bought out by the supermarket giant in a £1.4 billion takeover.

Argos said in a statement: “We are proposing more streamlined store management teams.

“It would create broader, more clearly defined roles that allow us to better support colleagues and serve customers.

“Those affected are being considered for updated management positions.

“There will be opportunities to redeploy to other roles in the group.”
