UFC news: Stipe Miocic issues Daniel Cormier vow after Brock Lesnar’s retirement

Miocic lost the heavyweight crown to Cormier in spectacular fashion last July at UFC 226, where he suffered a first-round KO loss.

The Cleveland native campaigned relentlessly for an immediate rematch but saw his call for a shot redemption fall on deaf ears.

Miocic’s route back to the heavyweight title was initially blocked by a proposed match between Cormier and former heavyweight king champion Lesnar.

Lesnar, however, has recently retired from mixed martial arts, which has paved the way for Cormier vs Miocic 2.

Miocic’s rematch with Cormier is expected to headline UFC 241 in Anaheim, California on August 17.

Both men have verbally agreed to the fight, though the promotion have yet to announce the bout.

Miocic is relishing his opportunity to exact revenge on Cormier, who he plans on beating in emphatic fashion.

“I’m ready,” Miocic told ESPN. “I’ve been ready. “And I’m going to take back what’s mine.”

In the eyes of many, Miocic – who owns the record for the most heavyweight title defences – deserved an immediate rematch with ‘DC’.

Cormier’s head coach Javier Mendez agrees with the notion, telling Express Sport earlier this year: “If we weren’t going to go with Brock Lesnar next, I know Daniel will want Jones.

“But from the perspective of who deserves it, it’s Stipe. But unfortunately for Stipe, that fight won’t create enough pay-per-view buys. So that fight will be third on the list.

“It’s unfortunate for him but it’s the same thing that happened to Cain Velasquez when he lost to Junior dos Santos.

“He didn’t get an immediate rematch, he hard to earn his way back.

“And unfortunately, that’s the fight game.”

Cormier, 40, hasn’t fought since defending his heavyweight title against Derrick Lewis last November at UFC 230.

Miocic, meanwhile, hasn’t set foot inside the Octagon since losing his title last July.
