The US president’s account was retweeting posts this morning from apparent firefighters who were backing him over presidential rival Joe Biden. One of the tweets read: “My husband a New York City firefighter for 15 years will be voting Trump 2020 all the way!!” However, the above tweet seems to have come from a fake account as once retweeted, the account’s name was changed.
It was changed to: “F*** Donald Trump” and the profile picture changed to a badge which read “Bernie 2020.”
Another post from the fake account followed which proved the previous post as a prank – as it was created by someone who said they believe Mr Trump is “awful”.
The tweet read: “What a great morning. In all seriousness, our president is an awful, hateful human being who wants nothing more than to keep the status quo and hatred prevalent in our country when we should be pushing forward with the rest of the world towards progress and change. Please vote.”
After the prank gained attention, the account posted another tweet which said: “Damn this blew up check out my Soundcloud.”
The prank seems to have been in the making for a year and a half.
Since September 2017 it has been posting messages of support for Mr Trump potentially looking for a retweet – but today was the only successful attempt.
The prank tweet was retweeted 678 times, liked 3,800 times and received 554 comments.
Mr Trump’s retweets this morning were looking to cast doubt on the support of firefighters for presidential rival Joe Biden.
Democrat Mr Biden announced his candidacy last week and has focused on appealing to Rust Belt workers who helped Mr Trump win in Pennsylvania and the upper Midwest.
The International Association of Firefighters endorsed Mr Biden on Monday.
