Roger Federer is like a ‘child’ on clay courts – fitness coach Pierre Paganini

That is according to Federer’s longtime fitness coach Pierre Paganini.

Three years after his last match on clay, Federer will play at the Madrid Masters next week before competing at the French Open in late May.

It marks a major shift in scheduling for Federer after opting to skip the campaign in 2017 and 2018.

But the 37-year-old is understood to have made a seamless transition back to the surface.

And an interview with Swiss publication Blick, Paganini was asked to describe how Federer’s training block had gone and he was delighted with what he’d seen.

He said: “Our work lasts until the 5th of May. So it’s too early to say that.

“It is only when the results are good. But we started well.

“It’s nice to see Roger’s anticipation of the clay.

“He started the training like a child looking forward to the first school trip – a madness.

“Feeling this enthusiasm has a big impact on the quality of the training.”

Paganini then gave an insight into the training Federer has undergone so far.

“It’s too specific to explain that exactly,” he said.

“In endurance, strength, agility, and explosiveness, there are many sub-factors. To train everything, this phase before Madrid is too short.

“And in between, he should also get enough days off. They are just as much a part of training – and are not there to celebrate, but for the recovery of previous training sessions and to prepare for the next day.

“For the harmony in training, the right moment for breaks is important. This requires a lot of flexibility from Roger.

“And that he has such a large family, he masters his time exemplary.”
