Google Chrome update – Here's how to enable dark mode on Windows 10

Google Chrome dark mode was a much requested feature from users.

Back in March, Chrome version 73 released and brought the functionality to macOS exclusively.

The dark mode within Chrome looks extremely similar to the programme’s Incognito mode thanks to the dark grey tones presented.

However, the fresh viewing tool was noticeable for the fact it covered more nuanced elements of the user interface, such as the search bar and settings drop-down menu for instance.

Not only does Google Chrome dark mode present an altered aesthetic, but it also makes browsing easier on user eyes, too.

While version 73 of the programme did not provide the dark mode functionality to Windows 10 fans, version 74 has just started rolling out to Microsoft fans and includes support for such a feature.

Google Chrome’s dark mode is not enabled within the app itself.

Instead, users will need to adjust the system-wide theme for their PC or desktop in order to change it.

That means if Windows 10 users turn on the software’s dark mode, it will enable the scheme for Chrome.

Microsoft fans can alter the colour pallet of their computer by heading to Settings > Personalisation > Colours.

From there, scrolling down will present an option that allows users to choose a “default app mode”.

Ensure this is switched to “dark” to enable the aesthetic.

It is worth noting the dark theme for Chrome on Windows 10 appears to be rolling out to fans gradually.

This means you should not be alarmed if the process described above does not work for you.

In fact, a Google Chrome community manager recently insisted the dark mode feature is currently only available to a “small number” of Windows 10 users running version 74.

Making the announcement on a Google support page, they said: “I can confirm that we are rolling out this feature to a small number of Chrome M74 users now, and that it will become more widely available in the near future.”

For those that have downloaded Chrome version 74 and are eager to turn on dark mode, a nifty trick can enable it early.

As noted by The Verge, right-clicking the shortcut for Chrome on your desktop and altering the programme’s properties can summon the new view.

Once you have opened the software’s properties, type “–force-dark-mode” without the quote marks at the end of the target location box and apply the change.

Re-launching Chrome should then result in Google’s dark mode being presented.
