Will Meghan Markle's royal baby be a US citizen? Will the child have dual nationality?

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s baby will enjoy the benefit of having two parents from different parts of the globe.

They will also enjoy being born into the British Royal Family, with much privilege and inherited wealth.

Meghan Markle’s child will automatically be both a US and UK citizen due to having a mum born in the US and a father who is British.

So what is dual citizenship (also known as dual nationality?)

The UK government website said: “Dual citizenship (also known as dual nationality) is allowed in the UK. This means you can be a British citizen and also a citizen of other countries.

“You do not need to apply for dual citizenship. You can apply for foreign citizenship and keep your British citizenship.”

So why is Meghan not a British citizen, despite being married to a British prince?

The government website explains this too. It read: “You do not automatically become a British citizen when you marry a person from the UK. You need to apply as the spouse of a British citizen.

“In some countries, a married person is automatically counted as having their partner’s nationality. Children may also automatically have a parent’s nationality even if they were born abroad.”

Prince Harry’s communication’s secretary, Jason Knauf, said in December 2017 Meghan would be “compliant with immigration requirements at all times.”

“I can also say she intends to become a UK citizen and will go through the process of that, which some of you may know takes a number of years,” he added.

The citizenship application costs £1,282.

Meghan will also have to have proven her relationship with Prince Harry is genuine, providing records of their romance via text, email etc, photographs of them together or flight tickets.

Meghan Markle’s child may well be eligible to pay tax in the US as well as the UK, experts have warned.

International tax lawyer Stuart E. Horwich told CBS MoneyWatch: “When a child is born a U.S. citizen, they are a U.S. taxpayer irrespective of residency,”

“The kid will have to list all foreign bank and financial accounts in which he or she has an interest.”

When is Meghan Markle due? This year, Easter Sunday falls on April 21, which will also be Queen Elizabeth II’s 93rd birthday, but what are the odds of the Royal baby sharing this day?

The Spring has been a popular time for Royal babies in recent years, with Princess Charlotte being born in May 2015 and Prince Louis arriving in April 2018.

As well as the Royal children having birthdays then, the Queen will celebrate her 93rd birthday on April 21 this year.
