Gwendoline Christie: 'So hard' Game of Thrones’ Brienne of Tarth reveals costume secret

Gwendoline Christie’s character, Brienne of Tarth, was knighted by Ser Jaime Lannister (played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) in season eight, episode two of Game of Thrones.

And in the next episode, the now Ser Brienne of Tarth, will be in the forefront of the battle at Winterfell against the White Walkers.

But the actress admitted it’s not easy playing the character, due to her extremely heavy costume.

Speaking about Brienne getting knighted, she told ELLE: “It was the culmination of blood, sweat, tears, and one very grumpy bear.

“It also put considerable weight on Christie’s shoulders, and not just emotionally.”

Discussing Brienne’s costume issues, Gwendoline, 40, added: “Do you know what? It’s so hard to move in Brienne’s costume. Her armour weighs two stone.”

“You put it on for the first time, and you can’t move,” she said.

Gwendoline admitted she has to “overcome” the problem, which adds to her character.

“So as the character, you’ve got an obstacle to overcome just to move in your own clothing. I think that’s a really interesting insight,” Gwendoline continued.

“It always starts in part with the costume, because clothing is really important.

“It’s the language we choose to communicate how we feel about ourselves.”

Following episode two of season eight, Gwendoline shared a heartwarming post praising her co-star Daniel Portman (plays Podrick Payne).

The British actress reflected on starring alongside the former squire for the past five seasons.

Alongside a behind-the-scenes snap of them posing together, Gwendoline said: “OH MY POD! @danportman Spending the last five seasons with the absolutely wonderfully talented Daniel Podrick Portmanteau has been a POD-SEND!

“I love you and I miss you and I can’t wait to watch you bloom through the rest of your career!”

She added: “IF YOU WERE A BAG, YOU’D BE A BAG-FOR-LIFE. @gameofthrones #TwoPeasInAPod Photo taken 2016. #EternalPODCAST.”

Gwendoline’s 827,000 Instagram followers went wild for the snap with many competing on her post.

One said: “Sir Brienne of Tarth, Knight of the Seven Kingdoms YESSSSSSSS GIRL.”

“Let’s get an entire episode of Brienne, Jamie and Podrick,” begged another.

A third praised: “The great chemistry you two had was wonderful to watch! Not to mention how funny it was to watch! I will miss you two acting together, maybe a future project will have you and Daniel work together again. Maybe it is wishful thinking.”

Game of Thrones season eight, episode three airs Sunday on HBO and is simulcast to Sky Atlantic at 2am on Monday morning.
