Game of Thrones season 8, episode 3: Who will die in the Battle of Winterfell?

Episode three of Game of Thrones is going to be seeing some big characters potentially getting the chop in the Battle of Winterfell. Although plot details are being kept heavily under wraps by HBO, fans have started to theorise and speculate about who could be killed in the forthcoming instalment of the show. There have been many clues littered throughout the last episode called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms as well as the rest of the show. Here’s our list of who is most likely to die in the Battle of Winterfell.

Who will die in the Battle of Winterfell?

Many fans believe the montage of characters shown during the Jenny of Oldstones song in episode two alluded to who would die.

Among those featured in the series of shots were Samwell Tarly (played by John Bradley), Gilly (Hannah Murray), baby Sam, Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner), Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen), Gendry (Joe Dempsie), Arya Stark (Maisie Williams), Greyworm (Jacob Anderson), Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel) and Jorah Mormont (Iain Glen).

Sansa Stark

Sansa could die if the castle falls but she’s a major player and her demise seems unlikely.

Missandei

Missandei may not be following her lover Greyworm in battle but she could either be killed by the undead should the castle fall.

Jorah Mormont

Jorah Mormont is in a similar position to Greyworm given he’ll be going into the battle.

His death could be a poignant moment for such a major character, who has been part of the series since the beginning.

GAME OF THRONES SEASON 8 RUNTIMES

Samwell Tarly

Samwell could die after making a point of standing out on the walls of Winterfell to fight the White Walkers.

Then again, Sam is an important character with a lot of knowledge, so it would be tragedy to lose him.

Gilly & baby Sam

Gilly and baby Sam could well meet their maker in episode three after they were seen holing down in the crypts on the eve of battle.

Theon Greyjoy

Theon could complete his arc of redemption by dying in battle and fighting for the Starks and Winterfell.

A death on the battlefield would be a fitting end to the character, who has suffered with an identity crisis since season one.

GAME OF THRONES SEASON 8 CAST

Gendry

Although he may have featured in the montage, Gendry seems too important a figure to die given his Baratheon lineage.

So Gendry could die in the Battle of Winterfell but it seems highly unlikely he will be killed off as he’s s strong contender for the Iron Throne.

Arya Stark

Again, Arya was in the montage which some have speculated could mark her demise.

The first look photos from episode three have also suggested she could perish in battle.

One image shows Sansa with tears in her eyes, hinting her sibling may have been killed.

Then again, Melisandre (Carice van Houten) previously told Arya they would meet again which strongly implies she survives.

Greyworm

Greyworm is highly likely to die given he’s leading the Unsullied into battle and will be on the front line.

Even if he does survive the Battle of Winterfell, his chances of making it to the end of the series are looking slim.

HOW MANY EPISODES ARE IN GAME OF THRONES SEASON 8?

Brienne of Tarth

Brienne (Gwendoline Christie) is going to be fight the White Walkers head-on, so it would make sense if she was killed.

Admittedly, her death would be complete tragedy given she’s such a wonderful character.

Jaime Lannister

Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) could be joining Brienne on the list of causalities in the Battle of Winterfell given his role.

Some people have even suggested Jaime will die in Brienne’s arms as the two finally realise their love for each other at the last moment.

Varys

Varys (Conleth Hill) is also one character who could die after season seven saw Melisandre warn him about his impending demise.
