EU PANIC: Warning for Brussels before EU elections – 'Germany is making a SERIOUS MISTAKE'

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is among those who have stalled the European Union into a “shy” status quo reluctant to move on and embrace globalisation, causing populist parties to gain field ahead of the EU elections, claimed Sandro Gozi. Speaking to Bloomberg, the Italian MEP candidate claimed the only way to “win the battle against the populists” was to accept French President Emmanuel Macron’s reform agenda and warned Germany has made “a serious mistake” in rejecting the Frenchman’s proposal.

The former European Affairs Minister said: “So far, Europe has remained in the status quo and some European leaders have worked to maintain the status quo.

“The shyness, the reluctance that we have seen so far to fully embrace the reform agenda proposed by Emmanuel Macron was a serious mistake.

“I think, for example, Germany is making a serious mistake.

“And I think the best way to attack the populists, the best way to win the battle against the populists is to get out of the status quo.”

Populists across the continent are expected to cause havoc at the May elections, with many of the prominent eurosceptic parties already teaming up in anti-EU coalitions.

Earlier this month, AfD chairman Jörg Meuthen revealed a new eurosceptic alliance would be called the European Alliance for People and Nations and would involve at least 10 parties – including that of Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, the Lega.

Speaking from Milan along with the leaders of the Danish People’s Party, The Finns Party and Alternative for Germany, Mr Salvini said: “We are working for a new European dream to many citizens.

“Too many citizens and people today, the EU is a nightmare and not a dream.

“We are working to take labour, family and safety back into the centre. We are talking about environmental protections, the future of younger generations.

“We try to do it with alternative movements after those of which have been in the power over the last decades, the Socialist and Democrats with their alliance have led us to uncertainty, frictions and a lack of safety.

“This is an alliance looking for the future. We start today. This family is going to get larger, including movements we have never been operating in the past.”

And after the launch of the new eurosceptic alliance, French populist leader Marine Le Pen has pledged to overhaul the European Union from the inside with the help of fellow eurosceptics Matteo Salvini and Nigel Farage.

Ms Le Pen, leader of right-wing National Rally, is set to team up with the Italian Deputy Prime Minister’s Lega movement to form a transnational supergroup after the European Parliament election.

The French populist chief has seemingly scrapped plans for Frexit and an exit from the EU’s Eurozone bloc as she seeks to reform her own party. She claimed with the help of Mr Salvini, the eurosceptic group in the EU Parliament will be “much more advanced than Emmanuel Macron’s” attempt to create his own liberal bloc.
