Boxing news: GGG calls for Canelo trilogy fight… but there’s a catch

The former WBA (Super), WBC and IBO middleweight champion fought the Mexican in September 2017 and September 2018.

Both contests were epic bouts and solidified the pair’s statuses as the best middleweights on the planet.

Golovkin ended up on the wrong side both decision verdicts, though many boxing fans and pundits believe the Kazakh was twice robbed of victory by poor judging.

A rubber match has been at the forefront of Golovkin’s mind ever since their second Las Vegas encounter, which somehow managed to top their first bout.

Although he’s scheduled to fight Steve Rolls in June, Golovkin’s desire to exact revenge upon Canelo hasn’t waned.

His willingness to face him in Las Vegas, however, has completely disappeared.

“I’m a fighter so I will fight no matter what,” ‘GGG’ said. “If it seems like the fight is going to Las Vegas, now we know we’ve seen Vegas’ true colours, and we’ll not try and get out of the fight.

“But we’ll try and change the situation to make it better for both fighters.”

Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler is also keen for a venue change for Canelo vs GGG 3 and likes the idea of the fight happening at Madison Square Garden in New York.

“Canelo fought here in December,” said Loeffler. “He told the Garden he likes fighting here.

Golovkin has fought here at Madison Square Garden. I think the third fight [between Canelo and Golovkin] will come down to economics in regards to the highest offer.

“In the first two fights with Canelo, there was no option for Gennady.

“They put it to us that Canelo will only fight Gennady in Las Vegas.

“We love the MGM and T-Mobile Arena, and the way he was treated.

“But when you arguably win two fights in a row, and only one judge out of six scores it for him, there’s something wrong. For whatever reason, there’s something wrong.

“So that’ll be a big point of the negotiations, the location, because now he’s no longer obligated to fight in Las Vegas like he was in the last two fights.”

Canelo will defend his WBA (Super) middleweight title against Daniel Jacobs a week on Saturday.

And Golovkin plans on facing the fighting pride of Mexico regardless of the outcome of his fight with Jacobs.

“We’re not gonna look at what he’s demanding such as a title,” Golovkin said of Canelo.

“I’m hoping to fight him, title or not.”
