Philippines earthquake MAPPED: Where did the 6.4 magnitude quake strike?

A powerful earthquake hit the southern Philippines this morning.

The 6.4 magnitude quake struck in the ”Ring of Fire” area of the Philippines prone to natural disasters.

The quake hit the Samar region and rescue missions are currently underway.

This was the second earthquake to strike the Philippines in just 24 hours.

According to natural disaster tracker USGS it hit near Paranas in Eastern Visayas but the tremors were felt for miles.

Reports in the region say it followed one of the strongest earthquakes residents had ever felt in the area on Monday.

Rescue teams in the Philippines searched for signs of life beneath the rubble of a collapsed four-storey commercial building.

The Philippines is prone to natural disasters and is located on the seismically active Pacific “Ring of Fire”, a horseshoe-shaped band of volcanoes and fault lines that arcs around the edge of the Pacific Ocean.

The earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 struck in Samar in the southern Philippines on Tuesday afternoon, according to the USGS.

There were no immediate reports of destruction there but the national seismology agency said damage could be expected.

The stronger quake followed another one which shook the country’s biggest island on Monday, and killed at least 15 people on Monday.

Monday’s 6.1 quake hit Porac, about 110 km (68 miles) north of Manila and damaged several buildings.

We will be updating this breaking news story as it unfolds.
