Kris Commons identifies ‘best piece of business’ Rangers have done under Steve Gerrard

Under Gerrard’s guidance, Rangers have become genuine title challengers again after he brought in a host of players in the last two transfer windows.

Signing Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis in January represented two big coups for the Scottish giants.

But Commons believes the less high-profile capture of midfielder Kamara on transfer deadline day in January is Gerrard’s best move since taking over.

“The best bit of business Rangers have done all season is probably pinching Glen Kamara away from Dundee,” he told The Scottish Daily Mail.

“He really does look a class act in the middle of the pitch.

“He was excellent against Hearts at Tynecastle on Saturday [a 3-1 win for Rangers] and if Rangers could go out and purchase a really technical number 10 with a bit of vision, they’d have the basis of a good midfield.”

Kamara cost Rangers just £50,000 and Gerrard was full of praise for him after his all-action display against Hearts.

“You’ve got Kamara who’s an absolute steal for £50,000,” he said.

“I can’t believe we got him. He’s going to be an incredible player if he keeps learning.”

Rangers beating Hearts at the weekend means Celtic will have to wait until the coming weekend at least until they are confirmed as Scottish Premiership champions.

Defoe, Ryan Jack and Nikola Katic were all on target for Gerrard’s side and the boss admitted Defoe might have played his way into the side on a regular basis.

The former England striker has been covering for suspended star Alfredo Morelos but Gerrard admits he might now keep him out the team.

“There’s a player playing with high confidence, creating chances and scoring goals,” Gerrard said.

“There’s a challenge there now. That’s the way Rangers should be, we should have options – especially this area.”

He added: ”I don’t pick on reputation and name.

“I’m not surprised by Jermain’s performance. He’s got unbelievable quality and if you play a system that suits Jermain, he will get you goals.
