Chris Evans: Virgin Radio Breakfast Show presenter spills on why he left BBC Radio 2

Chris Evans caused quite a stir when he announced he was leaving BBC Radio 2 last year to join Virgin Radio. He has since opened up about his decision to step down with his Virgin Radio Breakfast Show co-star, Vassos Alexander. The 53-year-old presenter and sports correspondent recently discussed some of the show’s most extravagant competitions. During their conversation, Chris recommended they hold a contest abroad a luxury boat in Portrush to coincide with Tiger Woods’ appearance at July’s Open Championship.

Explaining, the excited host began: “So what we could do is we could run a competition and get one of the elite boat companies to give us a boat for the listeners.

“You stay on the boat in the harbour, we do the show and you get to watch the golf with Sky Sports.”

The television personality then went on to joke about why he left the BBC and switched over to Virgin Radio.

He added: “It doesn’t get any better than this [but] still now and again it’s, ‘Why did you leave the BBC?”

Following his ballsy remark, Chris burst into a high-pitched yell, while his co-host, Vassos, quietly giggled in the background.

At the time Chris confirmed he was departing the BBC he also admitted he had been deliberating the decision for a year.

During a segment for Monday’s Pause for Thought, the father-of-five told Father Brian D’Arcy the choice had been a topic of conversation in his household a “few weeks and months” before he made up his mind.

“As Sir Terry [Wogan] said, ‘There’s never a right time to go, but there could be a wrong time to go’,” he said.

A statement released by the DJ at the time, read: “I have absolutely loved every single moment of my time at Radio 2.

“The last thirteen years have flashed by in what seems like the blink of an eye. I have learnt so much from so many people to whom I will be eternally grateful.”

He went on to add: “I honestly think The Breakfast Show is currently as positive, useful, sunny and inclusive as it has ever been.

“In fine shape for its next custodian. Whoever that turns out to be, I wish them all the very best, they are in for an absolute blast.”

Zoe Ball, the host of Strictly: It Takes Two, was later revealed as Chris’s replacement and took over from him at the beginning of this year.

Chris first joined Radio 2 in September 2005, hosting the Saturday afternoon show, he later took over from Sir Terry Wogan and the breakfast show in 2010.

He returned to Virgin Radio in the new year following two decades away from the show; his first breakfast show with Virgin was in October 1997.

Chris Evans’ Virgin Radio Breakfast Show airs weekdays at 6.30am.
