The French cannot support 'EU EMPIRE anymore!" – Le Pen demands Brussels reform

In an interview with the German newspaper, Welt, Ms Le Pen, who is the president of the National Rally, said: “I think that we pay too much money. “The French can not support this anymore. We have to come to our senses.”

Ms Le Pen was referring to the cash that comes from the EU’s Cohesion Fund which aims to help harmonise living conditions between the east of Europe and the rest of it.

Ms Le Pen said: “Today we are in the process of making the EU itself an empire.”

The National Rally, which is formerly known as the National Front, has adopted an environmental approach in a bid to get more European election votes.

Only a few months ago, her party was “extremely isolated” in the EU.

However, the situation has “radically changed in no time,” said Le Pen to “Welt”.

“In Europe, political movements have emerged that share our convictions, some of them even being in power, as in Italy, Austria, Poland and Hungary,” said Le Pen.

“With each election, our movement, which rejects the current way the EU functions, is gaining momentum and we now have the opportunity to change that organisation from within.”

In polls on the European elections in late May, Le Pen’s Rassemblement National is currently only a few percentage points behind the party of President Emmanuel Macron, making it the second strongest force in France.

The National Rally manifesto reads: “For the first time, the European Parliament can become the place where change is carried out, if an alliance of national and popular parties prevails.”

Le Pen is hoping she and Italian deputy prime minister Matteo Salvini can form a new supergroup of MEPs after European Parliamentary elections in May.
