Alex Jones: The One Show host gets apology after scolding Dan Walker 'Come on'

The One Show presenter, 42, was one of many Welsh people who shared their incredulity after Dan Walker, 42, came clean about not knowing the story of Gelert the faithful hound. Taking to Twitter, Dan informed his 560,000 followers his mother, who is Welsh, had been appalled by the news. “My Welsh mum is disappointed that I hadn’t heard of ‘Gelert’ the famous Welsh dog,” he wrote. Clearly on the same page as her BBC colleague’s mother, Alex Jones shared the post in view of her own 233,000 followers, jokingly telling him off for the oversight.

“Come on Dan!!!!” she tweeted, adding a kiss at the end to demonstrate the good-humour behind the chiding.

Dan was quick to apologise, replying: “Sorry.”

He also added a sheepish neutral face and a laughing emoji.

The story of Gelert says the faithful hound belonged to Prince Llywelyn the Great, who returned from hunting one day to find his infant son’s cradle empty.

It then tells of how he saw Gelert with blood dripping from his mouth, slaying the dog in a rage after assuming he had killed his son.

However, as the hound howled a final time, Llyweyn heard the cry of the baby coming from beneath the cradle, next to a wolf who had been killed by Gelert as he protected the child.

Devastated by remorse, the Prince gave the dog a grand burial and is said never to have smiled again.

Many of Dan’s fanbase were on Alex’s side, expressing their shock at the BBC Breakfast presenter being unaware of the tale.

“OMG! Gelert was a martyr, should’ve had a sainthood bestowed upon him,”(sic) one exclaimed. “Story makes me cry every time.”

“We heard it about once a year in school assembly,” another chipped in. “It’s emblazoned on every Welshie’s heart.”

Dan went on to share pictures of Gelert’s grave, complete with plaques which tell the famous dog’s story, with his 560,000 Twitter followers.

“Here is the legend of Gelert the dog,” he said, adding: “Sorry mum.”

Elsewhere, Alex has hosted The One Show alongside Matt Baker, 41, since 2010.

Currently pregnant with her second child, the Welsh-born star is set to depart on maternity leave later this month.

She is already mother to two-year-old son Teddy with her husband Charlie Thomson.

Last week, Express.co.uk exclusively revealed Alex Jones’ The One Show replacement, with Angellica Bell, 43, saying she would be filling in for the presenter for the first three weeks of her maternity leave, starting at the end of the month.

The One Show airs weekdays at 7pm on BBC One.
