Susan Boyle: ‘I feel I’m judged and spoken down to’ BGT singer speaks out on Asperger’s

Susan Boyle, 58, shot to fame on the ITV series Britain’s Got Talent, following her incredible audition back in 2009. Since then the singing sensation has gone on to become one of the bestselling British female artists and has sold over 25 million albums. However, the Scottish star admitted she finds the smallest of things “overwhelming”. Speaking to PEOPLE, she said of being told she had Asperger’s syndrome: “I knew of the diagnosis for a year before I decided to go public.

“It gave me time to learn and understand and really for everything to fall into place as to why emotionally things were overwhelming and why small things, like people getting into my personal space, would cause me so much anxiety.”

She added: “I think people who are aware of Asperger’s understand why I do things but to others who don’t I still feel I’m judged or misunderstood or spoken down to.”

Asperger’s syndrome is a form of Autism and is a lifelong condition that affects how people communicate and interact with others, according to the NHS.

Health problems associated with the condition include learning disabilities, anxiety, depression and epilepsy.

Susan previously spoke about being misdiagnosed with Asperger’s as a child and was told she had “brain damage”.

In a candid interview with the Observer in 2013, the star stated: “It was the wrong diagnosis when I was a kid.

“I was told I had brain damage. I always knew it was an unfair label. Now I have a clearer understanding of what’s wrong and I feel relieved and a bit more relaxed about myself.”

Meanwhile, the I Dreamed A Dream performer took to the Britain’s Got talent stage to mark 10 years since she first auditioned last weekend.

Judge Amanda Holden, 48, took to Twitter to praise the singer for her performance but revealed her crush in a second post.

In view of her 1.9 million followers, she wrote: “We need a chat though @SusanBoyle… Fancying @piersmorgan is a dream you should give up on, he doesn’t need any more attention than he already gets.

“Tune in this Saturday night from 7:15pm to take a trip down memory lane! #10YearsOfSusanBoyle.”

The blonde beauty seemingly appeared to spill the performer had a crush on Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan, 54.

In another post, Amanda gushed: “It’s 10 years since @SusanBoyle walked onto the @BGT stage! @aplusk & Demi Moore tweeted and she became an overnight global superstar!

“Susan is a reminder to never give up on our dreams, however young or old. The beauty of BGT is that it’s never too late. #10YearsOfSusanBoyle.”

Britain’s Got Talent airs on Saturday on ITV at 8pm.
