PS4 Surprise UPDATE: New free PlayStation games to download today

PS4 game fans on the hunt for something new to play this weekend now have some great choices to pick from.

One of those is a new demo that launched earlier in 2019 that has received excellent reviews on the PlayStation Store.

Steel Rats is an action-adventure title that lets fans of the Road Rash and Trials franchises try something new.

A 2.5D platformer that involves taking down an army of invading robots is undoubtedly something new to try out this weekend.

The full description for Steel Rats explains: “Become one of the Steel Rats, a biker gang sworn to protect their city against an invading army of alien robots – Junkbots.

“Wreck and ride through hordes of enemies, switching between four unique characters as you wreak havoc with the ultimate killing machine; your flame spewing, saw-bladed, motorcycle.

“Ride in style through the retro-futuristic world of Steel Rats. Set in an alternate version of 1940’s USA, gear up and mount your chromed stallion and save Coastal City from the invading horde of Junkbots.

“Your motorcycle is your weapon designed to crush your enemies in awesome and stylish ways while traversing up, down left and right, over rooftops and through enemy-infested tunnels.”

The game developed by Tate Multimedia launched late last year and has scored a solid rating on the PlayStation Store.

The Steel Rats demo can be downloaded for no extra charge and weighs in at just under 5GB.

This should make it a comfortable fit for any PS4 hard drive and looks set to remain on the digital platform for the foreseeable future, meaning you don’t have to rush to try it out.

The full version of Steel Rats has earned a decent rating on Metacritic, which currently shows the game having 11 positive user review scores and one mixed.

And if saving the world while driving a nasty motor isn’t your kind of fun, you can always head to the high seas for some Nautical combat.

Another new free game released this month on PS4 includes World of Warships: Legends, which can be downloaded today.

The new title from Wargaming shares a lot in common with its Tanks predecessor, although fans will have to wait until later in 2019 for full PS4 Pro support.

The game includes warships from the WWI and WWII eras, along with the chance at playing as historic admirals.

Crossing the T will undoubtedly take some skill online, which will require an active PS Plus account.

“From swift destroyers, threatening the peace with their deadly torpedoes and performing stealthy attacks from smoke screens, to noble cruisers which offer a well-rounded experience, and all the way to floating fortresses that are battleships,” the developer team at Wargaming reveals.

“Armed with the most powerful guns naval history has seen, players can choose their playstyle and rhythm, as each class takes a different approach.

“Battles themselves can also fall into 1 of 2 categories – Domination or Capture the base, but no matter what the objective is, you will always win by destroying all of your opponents’ warships.”

It should be noted that there are several versions of the game, some which cost money.

These founder packs are not required, meaning you just need to find the free download on the PlayStation Store, which weighs in at around 20GB, according to the official listing.

More free-to-play games are expected to be released over the coming months for PS4, alongside new PS Plus titles for May and beyond.
