Pointless Celebrities: Alexander Armstrong forced to improvise as contestant SPEECHLESS

Pointless is a fan-favourite and filled with quick jokes and regular banter between presenter Alexander Armstrong and his gameshow assistant Richard Osman on the BBC show.

Tonight’s edition was no different, and prompted an incredibly skilful side-step when Alexander was left having to fill an awkward silence.

Contestant Katie was faced with a question over actors who have played the Doctor or a companion in BBC science fiction drama Doctor Who.

The relaxed chat came to an end over the contestant’s career as a journalist and presenter, and Alexander said: “We come to our Doctor Who question – what are you going to go for?

“Or I should say whom are you going to go for?”

Stumped over what answer to come up with, Katie looked in deep thought, making a collection of “um” and “hmm” noises while the camera was focused on her.

Realising he needed to fill the silence on the quiz show, Alexander turned red-faced and slowly leaned away from the camera.

“What are you up to later this evening Richard?” he asked his assistant, and the audience could be heard snickering in the background.

“I’m glad you asked, I’m going to be the 14th Doctor. It’s my audition tonight,” Richard joked.

“Have they never asked you?” Alexander wondered with a grin.

“To be Doctor Who? No they’ve never asked me!” Richard quipped, concerned over the presenter’s question.

“Oh they should!” Alexander insisted, and Richard continued to suppress his giggles.

“That’s weird given my acting experience,” Richard teased.

Realising his co-host was inwardly laughing at him, Alexander trailed off: “Yeah well… still!”

“You’d be a good doctor,” Richard said, and Alexander was excited by the prospect.

“Oh I’d love that!” he declared, getting the wrong idea.

“You’d be a terrible Doctor Who but you’d be a good doctor,” Richard then clarified, and the contestant finally managed to think up an answer.

“Right, I’m going to go for Peter Davidson,” she decided.

Pointless continues tomorrow on BBC One.
