Galaxy Fold is incredibly popular but Samsung's device could have a big problem

Galaxy Fold is undeniably futuristic; the hardware comes a clamshell design, has two displays and a whopping six cameras.

The pliable product presents a 4.6-inch cover screen when folded and a colossal 7.3-inch panel when unfolded.

Powering the South Korean tech giant’s foldable powerhouse is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 chipset that is accompanied by a monstrous 12GB of RAM and a powerful Adreno 640 GPU.

Express.co.uk recently had a chance to go hands-on with the foldable device and left extremely impressed.

One of the biggest reasons for this is because the Galaxy Fold allows users to seamlessly transition between its two form factors while keeping open applications that are running.

Moreover, the huge 7.3-inch screen also provides an extremely immersive viewing experience for content such as YouTube and Instagram.

Galaxy Fold will release in the US on April 26 and May 3 in the UK.

Ahead of its American launch, Samsung gave Android enthusiasts the opportunity to pre-order the $1,980 (£1800) device and it appears to have been incredibly popular, surpassing expectations.

But, as noted by Droid Life, the firm appeared to rapidly sell out of its first batch of units.

The publication insisted those that reserved the device but did not pre-order immediately were sent an email hours after it was made available to purchase saying it was sold out.

The message read: “Thank you for reserving a Galaxy Fold. We’re sorry, but due to overwhelming demand, the Galaxy Fold is currently sold out on Samsung.com.

“We’ll let you know as soon as more phones are available, so keep an eye on your inbox for updates.”

On its site, the South Korean tech giant has declared pre-orders for the Fold “surpassed expectations” but did not give an indication as to when units will be available once more.

US network AT&T is still taking pre-orders for the hardware.

However, when customers attempt to do so, they are given an estimated shipping date of June 3, 2019.

Such a time is incredibly far from the Galaxy Fold’s April 26 release in the region.

Ahead of the Galaxy Fold’s debut, it appears some media outlets that had been given access to the device early have had them suffer from screen damage issues.

Reporters from The Verge, Android Central, Bloomberg, CNBC and more have all insisted they have encountered similar issues with the phone’s panel that have suffered from broken displays.

Although this has not been the case for everyone using a Galaxy Fold, many of the problems with the device appear to stem from a plastic film that is present on the device’s 7.3-inch panel.

In particular, YouTuber Marques Brownlee insisted after he started to move the film his display “blacked out” and was unable to be recovered.

In response to the concerns surrounding the hardware’s display ahead of its impending release date, Samsung said: “A limited number of early Galaxy Fold samples were provided to media for review. We have received a few reports regarding the main display on the samples provided.

“We will thoroughly inspect these units in person to determine the cause of the matter.

“Separately, a few reviewers reported having removed the top layer of the display causing damage to the screen. The main display on the Galaxy Fold features a top protective layer, which is part of the display structure designed to protect the screen from unintended scratches.

“Removing the protective layer or adding adhesives to the main display may cause damage. We will ensure this information is clearly delivered to our customers.”

Previously, Samsung had declared the Galaxy Fold was able to withstand 200,000 folds which it equated to 100 folds a day for five years.

It is unknown if, apart from making it clear customers should not remove the phone’s protective film, Samsung plans to issue an additional remedy for the reported problem.
