The historic building went up in flames on Monday evening, losing its iconic spire in the blaze. Investigators have now revealed an electrical short-circuit was the most likely cause of the disaster. More than 400 firefighters worked throughout the night on Monday to bring the blaze under control.
One firefighter was seriously injured in the process.
Parisian onlookers were left in tears as they watch the fire spread quickly through the historic building.
Large aspects of the 850-year-old building collapsed in the fire and a number of historical artefacts destroyed in the fire.
An investigation into the cause of the incident was launched as soon as the fire was extinguished.
Based on where in the building the flames started, initial speculation suggested restoration works could be responsible for the blaze.
While the cause of the fire has now been identified, the official added the “green light” is yet to be given for work to begin on the Cathedral for safety reasons.
Police have warned there “important risks” of collapse and falling objects remain.
President Emmanuel Macron has vowed to rebuild the damaged Cathedral within five years and has said it will be rebuilt “even more beautifully” than before.
“The fire at Notre Dame reminds us that our history never stops,” the Frenchman said in a televised address on Tuesday night.
“Everything that makes France material and spiritual is alive and for this reason it is fragile and we must not forget that.”
He continued: “Yes we will build the cathedral of Notre Dame even more beautiful than it was. But this must be done in five years. We can do that.”
Empathising with the people of France for the loss of the landmark building, he added: “I share your pain, but I also share your hope. We now have to act, and we will act, and we will succeed.”
