Star Wars Episode 9: BAD NEWS for fans of 'ReyLo' relationship in The Rise of Skywalker

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will wrap up forty years of storytelling when it is released this December. The final chapter in the Skywalker saga will see the contemporary heroes banding together for a new adventure. But some fans may be disappointed by a statement by Daisy Ridley about the romantic future of her character.

What is ReyLo’?

ReyLo is the title given to the burgeoning relationship between Rey and Kylo Ren, played by Adam Driver.

But there is some debate within the Star Wars fan community about the merits of the relationship.

ReyLo gathered steam in the aftermath of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which saw the pair connected telepathically by the force – later revealed to be a trick of Emperor Snoke’s to bring Rey to the dark side.

Despite working together towards the end of The Last Jedi, the pair ultimately ended on opposite sides of the fight.

What did Daisy Ridley say about ReyLo?

Ridley was speaking with Australian comedian and Star Wars podcaster Steele Saunders on the red carpet at the Star Wars Celebration this weekend.

Steele asked her opinion on ReyLo, and whether the relationship would blossom in The Rise of Skywalker.

Ridley confirmed she did “know about ReyLo,” before pausing significantly.

She continued: “I don’t know how I feel about it because everyone’s talking about the toxic things about the relationship. It’s essentially emotional…”

Many assume in this break, Ridley was going to say ’emotional abuse’, but she did not finish the sentence.

Ridley then added: “I do feel like deep down Kylo thinks what he’s doing is right and doesn’t think he’s wrong.

“But he has also killed so many people so I can’t really get behind it in a personal way.”

Steel Saunders said many fans would be heartbroken over her opinion, to which Ridley responded: “Maybe there’s redemption, who knows. Maybe we explore it in the film.”

STAR WARS RUMOUR: WILL NEW FILMS BE SET BEFORE SKYWALKER SAGA?

Of course, Ridley’s personal feelings about the fan-imagined relationship likely have no bearing on what JJ Abrams and Chris Terrio wrote in the screenplay for The Rise of Skywalker.

How their relationship, and the relationships between the other characters like Rose and Finn, play out remains to be seen.

Ridley confirmed during the Episode 9 panel that there will not be any more force mind connections in The Rise of Skywalker.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is out in cinemas on December 19, 2019.
