Piers Morgan: ‘Heartbreaking’ GMB host reacts to Notre Dame fire as spire COLLAPSES

A fire broke out this evening at the famous Notre Dame cathedral in the French capital.

Firefighters have been tackling the blaze to save the 850-year-old building, but the cathedral’s spire and roof have collapsed.

The cause of the fire is not yet clear.

Piers Morgan, 53, took to Twitter to comment on the on-going blaze and said it’s “awful to watch”.

He said: “Horrendous & heart-breaking.

“Few greater or more beautiful cultural monuments in the world than Notre-Dame Cathedral.

“Now engulfed in a raging inferno. Hope they can save it. #NotreDame.”

Retweeting another video of the horrific scenes, he said: “Jeez. In Easter week, the famous spire of one of the great Catholic monuments falls. Awful to watch.”

British singer Ellie Goulding shared her feelings on the terrible fire on Twitter.

She commented: “Feel profoundly sad about this… so much lost in a few seconds…

“I am praying (which I don’t do often) for the fire to be contained soon… utterly heartbreaking.”

Idris Elba expressed he shock and said: “I cannot believe what’s happening to Notre Dame.”

US President Donald Trump tweeted: “So horrible to watch the massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Perhaps flying water tankers could be used to put it out. Must act quickly!”

While Nancy Sinatra said: “Beloved Notre Dame Cathedral. This spire is gone now. It’s like watching someone you love die.”

The deputy mayor of Paris, Emmanuel Gregoire, said the cathedral had suffered “colossal damages”, and the emergency services were trying to salvage the art and other priceless pieces stored in the cathedral.

A cathedral spokesman said the entire wooden interior was burning and likely to be destroyed.

While the cause is not yet known, French media have reported the the fire may be linked to renovation work.

Paris prosecutors have already opened an investigation into the blaze and the authorities said no-one had been hurt.

French President Emmanuel Macron postponed a televised speech to the nation and is now at the scene.

He tweeted: “Our Lady of Paris in flames. Emotion of a whole nation. Thought for all Catholics and for all French. Like all our countrymen, I’m sad tonight to see this part of us burn.”
