Michelle Obama reveals how ‘crazy dudes’ influenced her daughters in the White House

Mrs Obama said she and her husband wanted to make life as normal as possible for their two daughters Malia and Sasha during their time as America’s First Family and learning to drive was part of that. Unlike normal teenagers, Michelle Obama’s daughters were taught to drive by the secret agents that were an integral part of growing up in Washington. The former First Lady said: “My girls lived in the White House longer than they lived in any house.

“Malia was 10 and Sasha was seven, so they came of age in the middle of that.

“And I said, Well they’ve got to learn how to drive and we can’t drive with them, so their agents had to teach them how to drive.”

Mrs Obama recalled the time Malia returned from her first driving lesson when she was taken to the Secret Service driving range.

“The agent said, she got into the car first time, and he said ‘floor it’.

“I was like ‘What?'”

She said Malia replied: “He said floor it, mom.”

Mrs Obama added: “I said, ‘Well what did you do?’ She said, ‘I floored it’.

“So this is how an agent teaches a kid to drive.

“Because the theory was, the most important part of driving is learning how to stop under any circumstance, so he was like, you’ve got to know what speed is like and how to stop with speed.

“I was like, these crazy dudes.”

But, Mrs Obama was keen to explain that her daughters’ lifestyles shared similarities to other teenagers.

She said they did “normal” things like going to watch sport and having sleepovers, including the girls sleeping over at other people’s houses.
