Star Wars 9 Rise of Skywalker director JJ Abrams teases ‘there’s MORE to Rey’s parentage’

Back in 2017, The Last Jedi saw Kylo Ren reveal to Rey that her parents were essentially nobodies. This big unveiling was a disappointment to some fans who had hoped Rey would be revealed as a Skywalker or a relative of another prominent Star Wars character. Rian Johnson, who wrote and directed The Last Jedi, chose to go this route after JJ Abrams set up the mystery surrounding Rey’s parents in The Force Awakens. And now Abrams is back for Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, he’s teased that there’s a little more to the story of who Rey really is to be revealed.

Speaking with Good Morning America at Star Wars Celebration yesterday, Abrams said: “I will say that we knew going into to this, that this movie, it had to be a satisfying conclusion.

“And we are well aware that that’s one of the things that’s sorta been out there.

“I don’t want to say that what happens in Episode VIII…y’know, we have honoured that.

“But I will say that there’s more to the story than you see.”

Pegg added: “There was some talk about, you know, a kind of relevant lineage for her.

“But I honestly don’t know, and I don’t know if anybody knows. We shall see.”

Despite the changes, perhaps Rey will become a Skywalker, as the film’s title suggests the surname of Anakin, Luke and Leia could become the name of a new order like the Jedi. Maybe the Skywalker will be the balance of the Force between the Jedi and Sith?

Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker is released in UK cinemas on December 19, 2019.
