Roger Federer clay court schedule revealed: Where will Swiss star play?

The first major clay court event of the season begins on Sunday when the Monte-Carlo Masters gets underway.

It is a busy period of the calendar as the players build up towards the French Open on the most demanding surface.

And for the first time since 2016, Federer will take part in the action on clay.

Federer’s last match on the surface was at the Italian Open in Rome when he was beaten by Dominic Thiem.

His last appearance at the French Open was in 2015 when he was beaten by eventual winner Stan Wawrinka in the quarter-finals.

But the Swiss star has signaled his intention to return and after wins in Dubai and Miami, he is more than capable of making an impact.

Where will Roger Federer play?

Federer has confirmed he will play at the Madrid Open in May.

He last played in Spain in 2015 but was knocked out of the tournament early on by Nick Kyrgios.

Federer will then play at the French Open, which starts on May 26.

Could Federer play anywhere else?

If Federer exits the Madrid Open early, he could decide to play at the Italian Open which starts on May 12.

The 37-year-old has not won in Rome but has been the runner-up on four occasions.

What is Federer’s record on clay?

Federer has a decent record on clay having reached five 5 French Open finals, winning once in 2009.

Of Federer’s 101 career titles, 11 of them have come on the clay. His last clay tournament win was the Istanbul Open in 2015.

In 2014, despite nursing a back problem, Federer led Switzerland to victory in the Davis Cup final against France on clay.

In total, Federer has 214 wins and 68 losses on clay which is a 76 per cent win record.
