eBay: Beatrix Potter 50p coin selling for £2k is a ’bargain’ – reason why you must beware

The Royal Mint release commemorative coins to mark a special occasion and for the last few years they have brought out various different Beatrix Potter coins.

The first Beatrix Potter collection was released in 2016 and new versions have been released each year since, including one just last month.

A seller on eBay has recently put up an original 2016 coin on eBay and it features a design of Peter Rabbit on the face.

They have listed the coin with the huge asking price of £1800, but there is one reason why the coin may not actually be worth so much.

The eBay user, “sophie3020” has listed the coin at the price of nearly £2,000, but this is just the starting price.

For keen coin collectors hoping to get their hands on the penny, they may be left spending much more as the auction style of the website means bidding can put the price up.

The seller has described the coin as a “very rare Peter Rabbit 50 pence coin” and said it is in “very good condition”.

Posted next to two pictures of the coin, “sophie3020” claimed another had sold for a huge amount.

They wrote: “One has recently sold for £5995 so grab yourself a bargain”.

However, this claim is not backed up and the coin may in fact be worth much less.

The coin has a mintage of 9,600,000, according to the coin website, Change Checker.

It was originally released by the Royal Mint in 2016 as part of a collection to honour Beatrix Potter on the 150th anniversary of her birth.

The coins, which have seen new versions released each year, are designed by Emma Noble.

The 2016 Peter Rabbit 50p coin rates one on the Scarcity Index, making the coin “common”.

This means the coin may not be a ‘bargain’ as described and checking with a coin expert on the actual valuation of the coin is recommended before making a bid.

One coin which has been put on sale for a huge price is the Battle of Hastings coin, listed for £4,500 on eBay.

The Battle of Hastings commemorative 50p coin was issued in 2016 by the Royal Mint and it was released to mark the 950th anniversary of the famous battle.

The coin has been given a mintage of 6,700,000 and it may be worth just £2, as coin publication Spend It? Save It? What Should You Do? has given it the tiny valuation.

A Beatrix Potter coin of the 2017 collection recently went on sale as a Benjamin Rabbit 2017 50 pence piece was listed for £599.99.

This uncirculated item can currently be bought on the Royal Mint website for just £10, meaning bidders can save money by shopping around.
