Chris Evans: Virgin Radio host probes Emma Bunton over Mel B and Geri in awkward chat

Emma Bunton, 43, joined Chris Evans, 53, on Virgin Radio to discuss the upcoming Spice Girls tour and her solo comeback. However, following 43-year-old Mel B’s recent remarks about a night of passion with Geri Halliwell, 46, talk soon turned to the Spice Girls gossip. “Do we want to talk about the Piers Morgan interview?” Chris asked. “I think it’s genius. I think Mel B dropped a gossip bomb,” he added, while Emma laughed awkwardly. Joking about the tour, the DJ added: “I think Geri and Mel B will have to sing 2 Become 1!” Emma seemed at a loss for what to say, giggling as she replied: “Out of anyone I’ve spoken to, actually, you know the girls more than me!”

Recalling the moment she found out about Mel’s statements, Emma said: “I was like, ‘Oh my goodness… what is she saying now?!’”

When it came to the claims about a fling between her bandmates, the popstar told Chris: “It’s the first I’ve heard of it, put it that way.”

Emma also said she hadn’t yet seen Mel’s interview with Piers Morgan, 53, but that it wasn’t long before her phone exploded with texts after the revelation.

“It’s got to be good for business, hasn’t it?” Chris teased, still laughing at the awkward conversation.

“I don’t know, has it?” Emma asked nervously.

Saying she mostly saw the situation as humorous, she added: “Also, with Mel, you take everything with pinch of salt. She’s great fun.”

The hilarious chat comes after Mel joined Piers on Life Stories, where he asked her: “You were coming here to be brutally honest — did or didn’t you sleep with Geri Halliwell? Did you sleep with her?”

Skirting the question, Mel replied: “Yeah, we all slept in a bed together, but not like that — all of us.”

“Did you sleep with Geri like that?” the interviewer pressed, at which point Mel smiled and nodded.

“Yes? Really?” he said.

“She’s going to hate me for this because she’s all posh in her country house with her husband,” Mel said.

The singer later clarified her comments about Geri, telling Australian radio show 2Day 104.1 the reported night of passion was “not a big deal”.

“I didn’t actually really admit anything, I just admitted, you know, we had a bit of a thing back then and that’s it,” she said. “We’ve known each other 20 plus years, it was just one thing that happened one night.

“It was just one thing that happened one night,” she added. “I didn’t go into detail about it at all.

“It was a little thing and we giggled about it the next day, that’s that.

“It’s not a big deal, especially not in this day and age.”

Meanwhile, Geri’s representative released a statement addressed the reports of a fling between the pair, saying: “It has been very disappointing to read about all these rumours again, especially on Mother’s Day of all days.

“Geri is really grateful for your support and loyalty for so many years.

“She loves the Spice Girls: Emma, Melanie, Melanie and Victoria.

“She would like you to know that what has been reported recently is simply not true and has been very hurtful to her family,” the statement, obtained by The Sun, read.

“Moving forward, Geri can’t wait to see the girls and all the fans on the tour, have an amazing time with everyone, and make some new memories.”

Chris Evans’ Breakfast Show with Sky airs weekdays at 6.30am on Virgin Radio.
