Steven Gerrard fires brutal warning to Rangers players ahead of summer transfer window

Gerrard’s side recovered from the weekend’s Old Firm defeat with a 3-0 win over Hearts last night.

Rangers face Motherwell on Sunday in the final game before the Scottish Premiership split and he has told them in no uncertain terms that they must impress over the final six games of the season.

“100% there are still players here playing for their future, people dropping standards or getting comfortable is not acceptable,” he said.

“You learn a lot about players over the course of a season.”

Gerrard is unhappy with the level of consistency shown by the squad and believes they need to improve, admitting he will be looking to the transfer market to add in key areas.

“The players are aware of the standards we are looking for, we have often achieved this level but the problem has been finding this consistently and drawing games we should have won,” he said.

“We will continue to try and strengthen our squad and eleven moving forward to improve this. The likes of Jermain who know what is expected at big clubs.

“Consistency has damaged us this season in terms of our targets. Going into next season this is for me to address.

“The only thing I can say is we will try and add more quality to make our eleven and squad stronger, there won’t be wholesale changes.”

The Rangers boss has been handed a one-game ban following his comments after the Celtic defeat but remains defiant in his hope that Ryan Kent will not be banned.

Rangers refused the offer of a ban yesterday meaning he was clear to play against Hearts and the case will be heard in the coming days.
